Fine or mild abrasives are often added to remove those small imperfections found on a vehicle's surface.
Solvents work to to dissolve and remove dirt and unwanted contaminants from the surface of the vehicle. Types of solvents in these products are mineral spirits, ethanol, or isopropyl alcohol. 
Surfactants lift grease and dirt, while also improving the effectiveness of the cleaning properties. Nonionic, anionic, or cationic surfactants are common surfactants you may find in aluminum metal polish.
Lubricants, such as mineral oil or silicone oil, may be added to reduce friction during the process of polishing.
